Published: February 04, 2021
When it comes to exterior wood shutters some woods fair better than others. This isn't to say that a cheaper wood like Poplar won't work for exterior shutters, because it will. With less expensive hardwoods like Poplar you will need to finish it with a good exterior sealant or paint to help it hold up against the abuse from the weather conditions throughout the year.
Cedar Wood Shutters
Cedar is probably the most commonly used wood species when it comes to exterior hardwood applications such as exterior shutters. Cedar is dimensionally stable, meaning it is resistant to warping and twisting so your cedar shutters aren't going to go out of whack with temperature changes and drying over time. The natural oils of cedar wood help to prevent bugs, decay and moisture from destroying your shutters over time.
Cypress Shutters
While cedars are the most popular and common choice among homeowners for exterior applications such as shutters there are many homeowners that opt for cypress. Cypress has been used in the southern United States for many years. Much like cedar cypress structurally stable and a bit harder than cedar, it also has similar protective qualities that protect it from bugs, moisture and decay.
Mahogany Shutters
If budget allows Mahogany is a great material for shutters. If your project is calling for a natural or stained finish Mahogany is a perfect choice with its tight straight reddish grain. Mahogany lumber is sturdy, strong and also resistant to moisture.
