Update your Bathroom Vanity with New Cabinet Doors and Drawer Fronts
Published: January 07, 2021
It's the start of a new year and one of the most popular home projects this time of year is updating or upgrading your bathroom. Bathroom remodels can be expensive and any way to save a couple of bucks here can be a welcome sight. A big portion of your bathroom budget can be tied up in replacing your vanity. Well we are here to tell you that this doesn't have to be the case, you can keep your existing vanity and update it with new doors and drawer fronts and give it that like new feel.
Refacing your Vanity
When it comes to refacing your vanity you will first want to remove the existing cabinet doors, drawer fronts and miscellaneous hardware. At this stage you are probably looking to update the color of your vanity so you will want to start by filling any holes in the cabinet where you have removed hardware and don't intend to reinstall the same or a similar fitting hardware or a fixing any imperfections in the exterior from regular use.
After you have filled any screw holes or dents from normal wear you will want to begin to prep the vanity for paint. The first step in prep would be to do a light to medium sanding, you don't need to sand down to bare wood but rather enough to remove any clear coat and scuff the surface enough to accept and hold paint and primer unless you are planning to stain a different color then you will need to sand down to bare wood.
Finishing your Vanity
Once the vanity is prepped you can start the finishing process, if painting you will want to prime your cabinet to provide a uniform surface that will readily accept your paint. We recommend using a good quality primer separate from an all-in-one paint and primer and choosing a good high quality cabinet paint to reduce runs, a paint that will withstand the constant use and provide a nice finish. At this stage you will also want to finish your new cabinet doors and drawer fronts if they are not already.
Installing your New Cabinet Doors and Drawer Fronts
Now that the boring part is out of the way the real fun can begin of hanging your new cabinet doors and drawer fronts. If using your existing or newer versions of the same hardware you can use the existing hole placement to help guide you as to where you should affix the hardware to your new cabinet door and drawer front. If you are moving to completely new hardware and filled in the holes from the old you will want to line up your new hinges on the face frame so they will properly support your new door when it is open.
