Front Entry Doors What are My Options
Published: September 22, 2020
Your front entry door must be tough; it needs to stand up to all of the possible elements of your region whether it's high winds, rain/snow, direct sun light and also keep out would be intruders and any other un welcome guests. Along with all these requirements your front door also needs to look good, after all your front door is first thing guests see when coming to your home and we all know first impressions are everything. Wood doors have been around forever and even though newer types of doors like metal and fiberglass have come t market wood entry doors are considered the upper echelon of doors.
Replacing your Front Entry Door
Sometimes replacing your front doors is as simply as replacing the existing door slab with a new one. Other times you may need to replace the entire frame, jamb, and threshold because they have begun to rot or are in disrepair. Even if the door frame is in good condition the studs it is attached to may have become bowed and out of square, and the only option here is a wooden door as these types of doors can be trimmed so the door hangs correctly.
What are My Options?
Prehung Front Entry Doors
The majority of new doors are prehung which means the door comes already encased in a new frame. This is your best option of your old frame is bad or you are enlarging the current opening. Things to consider when going with a prehung door, is this going to be a left or right handed door, you also want your entry door to swing inwards and not out. When measuring for prehung doors make sure to add 1/2-inch to the frame height and 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch to the width.
Slab Doors
If you plan on keeping your existing frame and are just replacing the door itself you can choose a slab door which allows you to set hinge and door side yourself. Slab wood doors can also be a little more work if you need to mortise out for a lockset and hinges, but can also alleviate the need to remove the entire frame, jamb and any casing to replace the entire door and jamb.
